PRUNING TREES AROUND YOUR BUSINESS
treesrvcblog • March 20, 2017

There are many reasons to keep your trees trimmed or pruned, but the three main reasons are for tree health, safety and aesthetics. Below are some important reasons for property managers to keep the trees pruned for their complex or office building.
VISIBILITY
A tree that is not maintained properly, looks sloppy and can inhibit cars from viewing your sign when driving by. Trees can have an inviting appeal, however if they are blocking your sign it can have a negative effect by making your business invisible.
If you have larger trees they may be trimmed up to a maximum of 30% of overall tree height. This is in adherence with the ANSI Standards. Keeping to these standards is the proper route to take to keep trees safe, well pruned and healthy. It will also help you with sign visibility without sacrificing aesthetics.
CLEARANCE
In many instances trees are planted too close to structures. A safe rule of thumb to adhere to is to provide a 5-10 foot gap from the building. The clearance is measured from the furthest point of the structure (overhang or awning)
Trees that are this close to a structure should be pruned at half the tree or 180 degrees. This will help reduce the long-term costs associated with consistently pruning back undesirable branches that sprout up. You will want to prune or these branches back to the tree trunk. The tree will look like a whole tree from the street, but from the inside it will look like a half tree.
If you are dealing with a larger tree over 50 feet – then if you cut too much your tree may be at risk of being lopsided. This is why it is important to hire a licensed arbortist
you can recommend proper pruning techniques for your tree.
PARKING ACCESSIBILITY
Now that you have properly trimmed or pruned your trees near your building and around your sign, it is important to tackle the rest of the trees around your parking lot. Standard practice for trees in a parking lot is they should be pruned to a height of 8 to 13 feet, and should be at a maximum of 30% of the trees height. If you have a large enough tree and you receive traffic through your parking with larger vehicles, you will want your Jacksonville arborist
to prune higher branches that may obstruct large vehicles from navigating your parking lot.
This is the hardest to identify, however if you notice mushrooms near or at the base of the tree, or mushrooms growing in the trunk, it could mean the tree is rotting. There are also above ground clues that can indicate poor root conditions: discoloration of leaves, stunted growth and thin crowns.
No living organism is predictable. If you notice anything out of the ordinary or you feel something may be wrong with your trees, don’t hesitate, contact a Jacksonville tree company
today. Protecting your property and your family is your top priority.
